Special Needs Furniture

Special Needs Furniture
Special needs furniture consists of furnishings that have been altered in some way for use by individuals with disabilities. Any piece of furniture can be adapted for those with physical challenges: beds, desks, tables, chairs, highchairs and many others. The purpose of special needs furniture is to enable someone to overcome a disability and participate more fully in day-to-day life. J. Rose Plaxen describes how regular furniture can be easily and inexpensively adapted for use as children's special needs furniture.

Special needs furniture is critical for someone with physical limitations. Mundane activities - that don't even register with those of us without disabilities - can be a tremendous challenge. Getting out of bed in the morning, opening a closet door or sitting upright in your chair may be difficult or even impossible if you are using regular furniture. But with little more than a roll of duct tape, some non-skid bathtub strips and a few Bungee shoe lace cords, parents and caregivers can create special needs furniture that makes such actions not only possible, but easy!

Special needs furniture are discussed in "Adapt My World", which contains descriptions of numerous adjustments to furniture and other everyday household objects that promote self-reliance and boost self-esteem in children. Rather than having to wait for someone to help you open a door or go down the stairs, children using adapted special needs furniture can do it themselves. With this independence in mind, a child with disabilities no longer has to feel different from everyone else.

A new car comes with a detailed owner manual, and new child comes with a wealth of how-to books, but unfortunately, resources for raising a disabled child are few. When J.Rose Plaxen realized her daughter was "differently abled" she decided to change this by writing Adapt My World: Homemade Adaptations for People with Disabilities, a home remedy-style book consisting of recipes for parents, educators and family members. "Our world, public or private, is not accommodating for differently abled individuals," said J.Rose Plaxen. "It's up to the individual who is taking care of each child to make their world truly their own. This book is filled with common-sense modifications that have an immediate and enormous impact on improving the daily lives of these children."

Adapt My World is the first such guide offering simple adaptations for many aspects of a child's life. Veteran parents, therapists, and teachers have handed down plenty of adaptations, but few have been printed for public viewing. Now families have a manual to guide them in accommodating their child's world. Adapt My World offers adaptations for the "differently abled" child at home, school, and play to achieve similar goals, tasks, and desires of an "abled" child.
